A Legacy of Success: The Wynn Family Opens Sunshine Ace Hardware

by | May 1, 2023

A Wynn family milestone has been achieved with the opening of Sunshine Ace Hardware: the 12th store in the Don Wynn namesake and the anchor for The Plaza at Founders Square, making it easier for nearby contractors, business owners and homeowners to be able to access hardware needs required east of I-75.

The Wynn family’s latest accomplishment, their 12th hardware store, Sunshine Ace Hardware, is a testament to the success of Don Wynn’s original vision when he launched Sunshine Hardware in downtown Naples in 1958. The store opened its doors on Saturday, April 22nd at Founders Square on the southeast corner of Immokalee Road and Collier Boulevard in Collier County, and serves as the anchor business for The Plaza at Founders Square, a retail strip at 8850 Founders Square Drive in the center of the mixed-use development on that busy corner. Sunshine Ace Hardware offers quality goods serviced by a friendly staff, continuing the legacy of Don Wynn’s family business.

The store is proud to be part of the community, making it easier for contractors, business owners and homeowners to find what they need east of I-75.

The store is proud to be a valuable member of the local community, providing an easy and convenient way for contractors, business owners and homeowners to access what they need east of I-75.

Founded by Don Wynn in 1953, the store has deep roots in Florida’s history, extending back to Bradford County just outside of Gainesville in the 1880s. After World War II, Wynn purchased the business with a GI loan of $2,000 and relocated to Fifth Avenue. By doubling its size and adding a parking lot between the two stores, the store has been able to serve even more customers over the years.

After buying out the previous owner of the Western Auto parts store, Wynn opened Sunshine Hardware and has since been a staple in the community.

Maide Mendez, the newly appointed Store Manager for Founders Square store, is proud to lead the way in hiring full- and part-time jobs. With over 8 years of experience as an assistant manager and store manager in South Florida, Mendez brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to her new role. The new 20,455-square-foot store features commercial paint, grilling and fishing departments, as well as a wide selection of power and hand tools, hardware, lawn and garden supplies, plumbing fixtures, outdoor living accessories, gifts and supplies for do-it-yourselfers. Plus, the state-of-the-art drive-thru window is a first for the Naples-based company. Mendez is confident that the new store will provide a great shopping experience while bringing employment opportunities to the community.

“Our customers love the convenience of online ordering and curbside pickup during the pandemic. We are thrilled that our loyal customers have discovered this easy way of shopping and that we can offer them the opportunity to shop from the comfort of their own homes”, said Mendez.

“Our customers have embraced the convenience of online ordering and curbside pickup during the pandemic, and we are delighted to be able to provide them with this easy shopping experience,” Mendez proudly stated, according to a press release.

“Sunshine Ace Hardware is proud to be expanding their reach and providing more and more people with the products and service they need. The company is currently in the process of finalizing leases for two new locations – one in Collier County within the next 12 to 18 months, and another in a nearby northern county within the next 24 months. It looks forward to announcing these exciting updates in the coming weeks.”

The Wynn family and Sunshine Ace Hardware continue the legacy of Don Wynn fighting for providing quality support for local contractors, business owners and homeowners. With 12 hardware stores open currently, their endeavors have been a success to new developments and are continuously striving in creating convenience and ease on their behalf. By anchoring The Plaza at Founders Square with it’s latest accomplishment combined with patronage and service by a friendly staff, Sunshine Ace Hardware hopes to serve everyone east of I-75 efficiently and productively.
