Finding Community Amongst the Retirees: Liz White’s Unexpected Move to Naples, Florida

by | May 17, 2023

Liz White found an unexpected sense of community and housing in Naples, Florida when she moved in with her parents amidst a pandemic. After getting to know the building owners and their high standards, Liz decided to rent an apartment in the same building for a great price not unlike what she was paying in Philadelphia for a smaller place. Surrounded by highly generous, retired senior citizens, Liz has found her new dream home and a happy network of supportive friends to help her get through all life’s ups and downs.

Last year, Liz White visited her parents in Naples, Florida, never expecting to find herself with an apartment of her own in the same building full of retirees. When the pandemic struck and her job went remote, the 31-year-old found herself at a crossroads and decided to move in with her parents for some time to figure out what came next. To her delight, she discovered a wonderful sense of community amongst the retired folks in the building who were always so kind and helpful to one another. White was proud to join them and experience such a positive atmosphere.

After talking with the building owners, she was thrilled to find that they were willing to rent her an apartment in the building. Knowing the owners and their high standards, White was confident that she’d be a great fit for the building and the perfect addition to the community.

Benefits of Living in White’s Apartment

Benefit 1: Affordable Rent
Benefit 2: Generous Community
Benefit 3: Enjoyment of Nature with Neighbors

White loves her two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment and the fact that she pays around $2000 a month for it which is nearly equal to what she was paying in Philadelphia for a smaller place. She works a 9-to-5 job, but still finds time to enjoy the sunset with her 65+ year old neighbors every night. White takes great pride in the camaraderie and generosity of the community, commenting that “people are always willing to help out in any way they can – it’s a truly giving and supportive community.”

Liz White loves living in a retirement community, despite having to adhere to certain rules. She appreciates the slower pace of life and the convenience of not having to fight for street parking. The building also offers some great amenities, such as a pool, beach access, and even a handy tool closet with all the necessary supplies for any DIY projects. All of these advantages make it worth putting up with the regulations, allowing White to enjoy early dinner dates without worrying about being too loud.

Perhaps most importantly, her rent includes a storage room that she can use for beach equipment and whatever else she doesn’t have space for in her apartment.

In the end, Liz White chose to move in permanently with her parents in Naples, Florida and luckily found an apartment for herself in their building as well. She was extremely happy by the warmth and kindness that everyone showed and were never pressingly judgmental or stereotyping of how life Stage contradicts age. Even when struggling to adjust to a completely new environment, the friendly neighbours and supportive community is would continue nurture and help growth of bonds uniting them with greater understanding and utmost respect no matter what the differences may be. Thus, it inspired Liz not to give up on immediate change and always stand strong as a brightly shining light.
