Turrell, Hall & Associates Awarded Contract to Revamp Historic Naples Pier

by | May 5, 2023

The city of Naples, Florida made a well-received decision this week in selecting a design and engineering firm for renovating the beloved Naples Pier. Turrell, Hall & Associates were chosen for the project after receiving just under $1.5 million from the Naples City Council following an extensive damage assessment conducted by the firm. An impressive survey created by the city and Naples Youth Council helped to identify the desired needs and wants of community members which led to Marine Officer Ted Blakenship’s suggestion that collaboration with conservation organizations could ensure protections for wildlife are also in place.

The Naples City Council proudly awarded the contract to Turrell, Hall & Associates Wednesday to provide design and engineering services for the repair of the Naples Pier. The firm presented a comprehensive damage assessment to Council in December and competed with MHK Architecture for the contract, ultimately receiving just less than $1.5 million. To ensure the project meets the needs of the community, a public survey conducted by the city and the Naples Youth Council garnered an impressive 10,000 responses regarding what is most important to locals about the pier and what they would like to see in the future design.

Surveyors overwhelmingly stated they use the pier for sunset viewings, sightseeing, entertaining guests, and fishing. The top choice for incorporation into the new design was an underwater pier wildlife camera. Additionally, respondents voiced a desire for designated fishing locations and bump-out deck seating that would prevent interference with those who are walking the pier.

Council Member Ted Blankenship has advocated for collaboration with environmental groups such as the Conservancy of Southwest Florida to identify strategies for protecting wildlife, such as pelicans. City Manager Jay Boodheshwar has already initiated this dialogue.

He recently discussed with a Conservancy representative the opportunity to provide input on the design of the Naples Pier. As the process moves forward, Boodheshwar is confident that the county will be able to balance the needs of the local community and wildlife.

He expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that it has been made a priority and is ahead of schedule with the building permit already in hand before the end of last year.

The city of Naples has taken meaningful steps to ensure their aesthetics and popular landmarks meet the needs and interests of community members. Through surveying and collaboration with ecological organizations, the Naples City Council seeks to pave a forward-thinking avenue for enhancing and maintaining community features, making sure residents will be able enjoy them for years to come.
